Illustration Friday: Smoke

This weeks Illustration Friday theme is smoke and this immediately makes me think of cigarettes, and from there I think about how our perception has changed so dramatically over the decades as to how harmful smoking is. I find it hard to believe that people ever wanted to smoke in their office buildings, in restaurants, even in their beds. Whenever I watch an old movie and someone lights up in a space that is completely, and rightfully, off limits today, I kind of cringe. I have chosen this piece, Ron, as my IF for the week because he just looks like the kind of guy that worked in that kind of office where they all had secretaries with pin curls and ashtrays on their desks. Can you see it??

Yes! He is perfect for the characterization you're describing. It is pretty incredible how people used to smoke everywhere...ecven hospitals! My family doctor was a chain smoker and he would acually smoke while talking to us in his office. Disgusting! Your illo, however, is fabulous. Great job!

very nice collage indeed! i don't mind people/friends smoking when we're sitting out in a biergarten. only since 1st september 2006 smoking in public places here in luxembourg is prohibited. europe is slowly changing, but in germany you can still smoke around. what really bothers me are people smoking in an elevator! and thanks for you kind comment on my blog.
